INFORMATION REGARDING THE EVENT HELD YESTERDAY AT LDF SCHOOL: FEBRUARY 4TH-NATIONAL WORLD READ ALOUD DAY-AADIZOOKAAN (WINTER STORIES)
Merle Sharmann (LDF School Volunteer Coordinator) wanted to share these thoughts.
The art of storytelling was alive and well at Lac Du Flambeau Elementary School! It all began with invitations to our Tribal Council, School Board, and Town Council to come and introduce themselves in their leadership roles, and then to read to our children.
Winter Stories (Aadizookaan) are an old and loved tradition for the Ojibwe. These are stories told to children during long winter nights when there is snow on the ground. World Read Aloud Day celebrates reading the printed word with children everywhere. We blended both by reading books that are from our library's Indigenous collection. Our readers, Tribal Council members, President Johnson, Betty Lou Wayman, Stephanie Thompson, Gloria Cobb, Dr. Katrina Mares, Nadine Poupart, and LDF School Board President Mike Zimmerman shared not only the joy of reading but also their love of community service. Now, through this shared experience, when the children are out in their community, they will see and know leaders who are there for them. The spirit of learning life-lessons from stories continues!
A big thank you to the LDF Administration, Teachers, and Community Leaders who understand the power of shared experience!
Merle Scharmann. LDF Volunteer Co-ordinator.

Family Services is inviting your thoughts as we build a class around NICWA’s Positive Indian Parenting. This program blends cultural wisdom, stories, and traditions with everyday parenting needs. Your feedback will help us shape an 8-week class that truly reflects the families we serve. We are in the planning process of setting class sessions up and would love to hear what you would like included. The knowledge is here waiting, let’s start this new year by bringing our traditional values, our grandparent’s teachings our history forward and present with a modern kick.
