Greetings Lac du Flambeau School District students, parents and community members,
It’s mid-March and we are still starting some of our days with below zero weather, but I can feel a hint of warmth in the air and look forward to the longer days. Spring will soon be upon us. There’s nothing better than longer days filled with brilliant sunshine.
Spring is also a time we start to finalize our plans for the 2022-2023 school year. One of the first steps in that planning process was the announcement by the Board of Education of the new District Administrator. Dr. Joshua Ernst has been selected as the next District Administrator for the Lac du Flambeau School District. Dr Ernst is a Lakeland Union High School alum and started his career as a substitute teacher in the Lac du Flambeau School District in 2005. Prior to moving into administration, he worked as a paraeducator and special education teacher in the Wausau School District. He then became an assistant principal and principal in the Wausau School District before moving into his current position where he is now serving in his seventh year as Superintendent in the Clear Lake School District. Dr. Ernst brings a wealth of experience at every level of education. We will be working closely with Dr. Ernst to make the transition to leadership at Lac du Flambeau as seamless as possible. Dr. Ernst will officially begin his duties at Lac du Flambeau on July 1, 2022. Welcome Dr. Ernst.
In addition to the new district administrator, the District is looking to fill the position of Dean of Students for the 2022-2023 school year. This is a new position that was created to focus on promoting positive student behavior. The Dean of students is responsible for monitoring and enhancing the quality of student life including student focused events and student behavior by fostering a positive, engaging, and caring atmosphere and a healthy school community that enables students to flourish.
The District is also looking to fill two other key positions, the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment as well as the Federal Program/AODA coordinator. Our current Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Terri Andrews and our Title VI/AODA Coordinator, Sue Wolfe, both announced their retirements effective at the end of the school year.
The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment provides leadership and vision in the ongoing planning, implementation, development, direction, review and evaluation of the district's curriculum and instructional services, coordination of the Districts Federal ESSA grants, working with families, community members, teachers, information technology experts, and curriculum specialists to develop academic plans for students.
The Title VI/AODA Coordinator’s job description will be updated to more accurately reflect the responsibilities of the position as it has evolved over the many years that Sue Wolfe served in that capacity.
We plan to post these positions in the near future with a goal of selecting the candidates by the end of the school year.
Larry Ouimette
Superintendent

Lunch with the principal! Pictured below is Sharon-Lee Bauman and Mr. Ben Fieck. Sharon spent 200 WOW bucks to have lunch with the principal! Both enjoyed their lunch together, lots of questions and looking at all of the "cool" stuff in the principals office.

Good morning, Here is a message from Lac du Flambeau Public School:
This afternoon we will need to combine bus routes as the following
4LD/2LD (blue/red) - Blue bus first, then back for the red bus students.
1LD/6LD (white/green) - White bus first, then back for the green bus.
Please make early arrangements as necessary. Thank you.

Boozhoo Parents and Community,
On Friday, February 25, the CDC announced revised guidance that eases mask guidance for upwards of 70% of the population. As an overview, areas with a high COVID-19 community level (about 30% of the US population), masks would still be recommended. For the remaining 70% of communities, areas with low or medium community level, masks are no longer recommended for the general public.
On Monday, February 28, the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council passed a resolution lifting the requirement of the wearing of masks when indoors at public buildings. The resolution takes effect at 12:01 AM on Friday, March 4, 2022.
As a result of the low COVID 19 Community Level and the lifting of the mask requirement by the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council, wearing masks will be optional in the Lac du Flambeau School District effective Friday, March 4, 2022.
We want to thank all of you for your cooperation in our efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID 19. We continue to encourage you to stay up to date with COVID 19 vaccines and get tested if you have symptoms.
Have a great March!
Miigwetch,
Larry W. Ouimette
Superintendent

Dear Warrior Family,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. Beloved former Head Start and Lac du Flambeau Public School staff member Miss Mary Masiakowski started her journey on to be with The Great Spirit after a courageous battle with an ongoing medical condition. Miss Mary had a profound impact on our students and staff. She loved deer and duck hunting, fishing and the Boston Red Sox! Our sincere condolences and heartfelt thoughts go out to her family, friends and loved ones. All of us, staff and students, are saddened by the loss of Miss Mary, and we ask for your support during this difficult time. Miss Mary will always be a beloved member of our Warrior community.

Boozhoo Families,
This letter is to inform you that we received information this morning that a student was potentially in possession of a firearm while at school. Out of an abundance of caution, a lockdown was quickly initiated and tribal police were notified immediately. Tribal police made contact with the student who reportedly had the firearm and later confirmed that the student had brought a toy gun to school. The lockdown was lifted after the weapon was found to be a toy and not a credible threat.
Our school is committed to the safety and education of all our students. Please discuss this incident with your child(ren) and emphasize that nobody should bring toy guns or toy weapons of any kind to school. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance, practicing emergency procedures and the school/police partnership. We are grateful for the quick response from staff and tribal police in addressing this matter.

An important reminder from Lac du Flambeau Public School: Please remember, until further notice, Lac du Flambeau Public School requires everyone to wear a face covering while inside the school building regardless of vaccination status. We can use your help in ensuring students are wearing a face covering prior to boarding the school bus or being dropped off at school each day. Lakeland Area Bus Service and the school have a limited supply of extra face coverings. We greatly appreciate your help with this important safety matter. Miigwech!
